Question, Reflect, Act: Transformative Learning at Sandy Spring Friends School

At Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS), we view education as much more than the transfer of knowledge. Our goal is to cultivate compassionate, reflective, and proactive individuals who are equipped to make a positive impact on the world around them. We achieve this through a dynamic academic program that encourages students to explore, reflect, and take action—developing the critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills they’ll need to thrive in an ever-changing global society.

The QRA Framework: Question, Reflect, Act

At the heart of our approach lies the QRA framework—Question, Reflect, Act. This methodology invites students to actively engage with new ideas by questioning, reflecting, and applying their knowledge. By focusing on these core principles, students gain not only a deep understanding of academic content but also the life skills that will help them navigate the world with empathy and purpose. It’s a process that encourages inquiry at every step and drives meaningful, real-world learning.

Inquiry-Based Learning: Connecting the Classroom to the World

We believe that inquiry-based learning is a powerful tool for student development, and we incorporate it across grade levels to inspire curiosity and creativity. For instance, in our Lower School, fourth-grade students recently used math to make and slice pizzas, applying their knowledge of fractions to a real-world task. They even harvested fresh ingredients from their class garden, further reinforcing the connection between what they learn and the world outside the classroom.

In the Upper School, students take ownership of their learning through Passion Projects—self-driven initiatives that allow them to dive into topics they are passionate about. These projects culminate in thoughtful presentations, giving students the chance to share their findings and insights with the broader community. It’s an opportunity for deep reflection, research, and creativity, culminating in a celebration of student-driven learning.

Tackling Real-World Challenges: Design Thinking and Engineering

At SSFS, we encourage students to apply their learning to real-world challenges, particularly through the lenses of design thinking and engineering. Middle school students recently worked alongside a staff member who uses a wheelchair to design solutions for improving accessibility. This project not only helped students develop practical problem-solving skills but also taught them the importance of empathy, collaboration, and community-mindedness.

Our Upper School students also have the opportunity to test their engineering skills in competitions like the DC Electric Vehicle Grand Prix, where they recently placed 5th out of 25 teams. Through this experience, students learned how to design and race an electric vehicle while reinforcing their commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Core Principles of SSFS Education

The SSFS approach is built upon seven guiding principles that shape everything we do:

  1. Close, Cooperative Relationships: Teachers and students build strong, supportive connections that form the foundation of our learning environment.

  2. Intellectual Rigor: We maintain high academic standards while fostering curiosity and creativity in all students.

  3. Belonging: We prioritize inclusivity, ensuring that every student feels valued and respected.

  4. Connection to the Natural World: Our curriculum integrates the outdoors, helping students understand and appreciate the environment.

  5. Global Perspective: We encourage students to think globally, preparing them for success in an interconnected world.

  6. Real-World Learning: Students apply what they learn in the classroom to practical situations, making education more relevant and impactful.

  7. Living Our Motto: Our school motto, "Let Your Lives Speak," reminds students that their actions should reflect their values and beliefs.

Preparing Students for the Future

At SSFS, we are committed to ensuring that every student is not only academically prepared for the future but also equipped with the skills and values necessary to lead with purpose and integrity. Our holistic approach to education emphasizes the development of intellectual, social, and emotional skills, ensuring that our students are ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
