Sandy Spring Friends School – A Beacon of Hope and Resilience

Sandy Spring Friends School to Remain Open Through 2027-2028

Just weeks after announcing its impending closure, Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS) has reversed course, securing the funding needed to remain open for at least three more years. The announcement comes as a relief to students, parents, faculty, and alumni who rallied together to save the beloved Quaker institution.

A Community Rallies to Save SSFS

On April 14, 2025, the school’s Board of Trustees announced that SSFS would close at the end of the academic year due to financial instability. The news sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an immediate and passionate response.

A newly formed coalition, Friends of Sandy Spring Friends School, spearheaded efforts to raise funds, securing $15 million in pledges in just over a week. More than 1,500 people signed a petition urging the board to reconsider, emphasizing the school’s deep impact on generations of students.

A New Path Forward

On April 23, the board confirmed that “substantial and meaningful funding guarantees” would allow SSFS to remain open through the 2027-2028 school year. While long-term financial stability will require continued fundraising, this development marks a major victory for the community.

Why SSFS Matters

Founded in 1961, Sandy Spring Friends School is more than just a private institution—it’s a vibrant, values-driven community. Nestled on 140 acres in Montgomery County, the school offers:

  • Quaker-inspired education centered on simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship (SPICES).

  • Experiential learning, including an educational farm, cross-country trails, and a swimming pond.

  • A diverse student body, with 33% receiving financial aid, ensuring accessibility.

  • A strong academic program from preschool through 12th grade, fostering critical thinking and global awareness.

Looking Ahead

The school’s leadership has pledged to rebuild trust and ensure long-term sustainability. A task force will soon provide more details on next steps, with updates expected for faculty, staff, and parents by April 28.
