Academics at Sandy Spring Friends School: A Holistic Approach to Education

At Sandy Spring Friends School, we believe that the purpose of education is not just to impart knowledge, but to shape students into compassionate, thoughtful, and proactive citizens of the world. Our academic program is rooted in a philosophy of inquiry, reflection, and action—principles that empower students to understand why and how they learn, not just what they learn.

The Power of QRA: Question, Reflection, Action

Central to our educational approach is the QRA framework—Question, Reflection, Action. This student-centered methodology encourages learners to actively engage with new ideas by asking critical questions, reflecting on their experiences and insights, and putting their knowledge into action. This process helps students not only gain a deep understanding of academic content but also develop essential life skills such as critical thinking, empathy, and problem-solving.

Inquiry-Based Learning in Action

Our students experience the power of inquiry-based learning at every level. In the Lower School, for example, fourth graders recently integrated their knowledge of fractions with hands-on learning, using math to make and slice pizzas, paired with fresh produce from their class’s raised garden beds. This type of learning fosters creativity and helps students see the real-world application of their academic studies.

In the Upper School, our senior students take on Passion Projects, an opportunity for them to pursue an in-depth exploration of a topic they are passionate about. These projects culminate in dynamic presentations that reflect their research, creativity, and personal growth. In 2024, these students showcased their work in a webinar, sharing their findings with the community.

Real-World Problem Solving: Engineering and Design Thinking

Sandy Spring Friends School encourages students to tackle real-world problems by integrating subjects like design thinking and engineering into their curricula. Our middle school students recently took on the challenge of solving a real-world issue involving disability access. Working with a staff member who uses a wheelchair, students explored how to apply design thinking to improve accessibility, learning not only about engineering but also about empathy, privilege, and community-building.

In the realm of engineering, our Upper School students once again excelled at the DC Electric Vehicle Grand Prix, where our team placed 5th out of 25 teams from the region. The students had the opportunity to design and race an electric vehicle, demonstrating both their technical expertise and commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Seven Characteristics of a SSFS Progressive Education

Sandy Spring Friends School’s progressive education approach is characterized by seven key principles:

  1. Close, Cooperative Relationships: Our teachers foster strong, supportive relationships with students, ensuring a foundation for effective learning.

  2. Intellectual Rigor: We maintain high academic standards while promoting curiosity and creativity.

  3. Belonging: We create an inclusive environment where every student feels valued.

  4. Connection to the Natural World: Learning is integrated with the outdoors, offering students a deeper understanding of their environment.

  5. Global Perspective: Our curriculum encourages students to think beyond borders, preparing them for a globalized world.

  6. Real-World Learning: Classroom knowledge is applied in real-life contexts, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

  7. Living the Motto: Our school motto, “Let Your Lives Speak,” reminds students that their actions reflect their values and beliefs.

A School that Equips Students for the Future

Sandy Spring Friends School is committed to fostering a community where every student is not only intellectually prepared for the future but also equipped with the social, emotional, and ethical tools necessary to lead with purpose and compassion. Our approach ensures that students are prepared to engage in the world thoughtfully and effectively, with a strong foundation of knowledge and a deep sense of responsibility to others.
